Songs Of The Week

We had a variety of new music released this week, and these are just a few of my favourites.

⁃ Little Mix – Bounce Back

I have been a Little Mix fan since the very beginning, and they never disappoint! ‘Bounce Back’ is a catchy pop song that’ll have you dancing like you’re the fifth member of the group. The song starts off acapella, and shows off the girls’ vocals and flaw-free harmonies, and later in the song it samples and gives new life to ‘Back To Life’ by Soul II Soul. This is a great song to introduce this new Little Mix era!

⁃ The Free Nationals, Mac Miller & Kali Uchis – Time

A super chill R&B song with soul influences and lyrics about love and the need to feel something more, even when this person feels like everything to you. The production in this song is probably my favourite, starting off with a simple guitar and slowly building up into this layered mix of sounds that sound SO great together, and the perfect backing for Kali and Mac’s voices.

⁃ Taylor Swift – You Need To Calm Down

Taylor released this song along with the announcement of her next album ‘Lover’, out 23 August. ‘You Need To Calm Down’ is a sort of letter from Taylor to anyone hateful, calling them out for their unnecessary negativity, sung over a synth-pop and repetitive sound. Her voice and vocal production on the song are great and consistent with what we hear on ‘ME!’ – I’m looking forward to the album and Taylor’s colourful new era.

⁃ Matoma, MNEK & Kiana Ledé – Bruised Not Broken

Your new favourite dance song is here. Besides MNEK and Kiana’s incredible voices singing relatable and honest lyrics, the production is fantastic and just takes the song up a notch, without being overwhelming (which I find some dance songs can be) . This is the collaboration I didn’t know I needed, but I’m SO glad it exists.

– Bazzi & 21 Savage – Focus

Anyone else obsessed with Bazzi’s voice? This song is so great – it’s a whole “Do your own thing” vibe with the people you choose, focusing on what you have instead of obsessing on what you don’t. I’d say it’s a pop song, but with a subtle trap influence, and 21 Savage’s rap works really well here, it doesn’t feel like an unnecessary add-on. Also, the background choir thingy, is really interesting!

⁃ Alec Benjamin – Must Have Been The Wind

Alec Benjamin is a story teller. He has an incredible way of sharing experiences through song that make it so real, almost like we were there with him. His voice is gentle and his melody and production choices always help tell the story beautifully. This story is a difficult but necessary one to tell, it’s about being supportive and helping fellow humans, which I think we should all do.

⁃ Social House – Haunt You

social house

Social House were producers on Ariana Grande’s ‘thank u, next’ and ‘7 Rings’, which was the first time I had heard of them, so I was interested in hearing some of their own music. ‘Haunt You’ is a love song of comparisons as well as the effects and struggles relationships face because of past and present influences. It is honestly such a beautiful song, but not what I was expecting (which I think makes me love it more).

⁃ Kaskade & Meghan Trainor – With You

We have another great dance song this week, and I know it’s cold in South Africa at the moment, but this song is SO great for summer and drives by the beach. The dance production is so good, and the lyrics are also just a sassy, “I am good without” vibe, which makes it even better to jam to in the car with friends who are there for you when you’re done having your heartbroken.
