Design Joburg 2018

Being a designer myself, I always enjoy going to exhibitions that showcase local talent in design, and just all the creatives doing awesome things in the South African design realm. Design Joburg 2018 does exactly that (and more) – with an inspiring display of beautiful design, unique decor, and an incredibly well put together show.

The show has a fantastic mix of designers who all have a different inspiration and approach to design. There is furniture and lighting design, interior design, designer stationery and prints, fabric design, and it’s just awesome to immerse yourself in what local designers are creating. Upon entering the venue, we see exactly that in the ‘Front Row’ stand which is a collection of chairs and side tables from various designers exhibiting at Design Joburg.

Another thing I loved seeing was multiple designers come together and creating different rooms and spaces – my favourite being the stand curated by Form Interior Design, which featured beautiful pieces by Wiid Design, Luvarre and Meyer Von Wielligh.

As well as the Elle Decoration stand, which featured designs from Woodbender, Hertex Fabrics and Lemon.

These collaborations were also taken into the press lounge, the ‘Colab’ pop up by Marble, and the Hendricks Gin Bar.

I also enjoyed seeing and hearing about the inspiration behind certain designs, like ‘The African Crowns Collection” by The Urbanative, the bright and memorable stand and designs from Flaunt Concepts, the use of beautiful forms and woods by David Krynauw, and the timeless, nostalgic designs from both Tonic and Anatomy Design, and the warmth both their stands displayed.

Other stands that I found exciting and memorable were Mobelli‘s chairs under the bright orange ‘spotlights’, Polmans Gray’s confusing and interesting installation “The Room”, Belgotex‘s exploration of textures and colour, Kohler‘s daring and fantastic display of bathrooms that were more than just bathrooms and the bold and rich colours in Classic Bond Decor’s stand.

Design Joburg happens once a year, and this year runs from 25 May 2018 to 27 May 2018 at the Sandton Convention Centre – so you only have this weekend to check out this fantastic show! You can get your tickets here and to find out more, you can go to
